Environmental policy

Cylch's (Wales Community Recycling Network) Mission is to Promote sustainable resource management through education and practical action. Cylch's objectives are to develop the national network of community recycling organisations; to provide quality support for members; to position the community recycling sector as an essential partner in the future of waste management in Wales; and to establish Cylch as an exemplary social enterprise.

Cylch promotes community ownership of the waste issue and believes that waste materials should be viewed as a resource and that the recovery of that resource should provide employment for local people. Currently Cylch represents more than 60 community projects throughout Wales.

Cylch aims to promote high environmental standards both internally and externally, including trustees, employees, contractors and partners within the voluntary, public and private sectors.

Cylch understands that its activities have an impact on the local and global environment and is committed to the prevention of pollution whilst conducting its activities and the continual environmental improvement of its operations, processes and activities.

Cylch aims to:
  • meet or exceed all relevant environmental legislation
  • enlist the support and commitment of staff in the programme of environmental improvement, including raising awareness of the company environmental policy
  • promote conservation of all resources by:
    - using sustainable resources and increasing the use of recycled and recyclable material,
    - expanding the recycling of materials,
    - decreasing the use of resources such as water, energy and paper where it is practicable to do so, and
    - monitoring and reviewing transport use
  • review this policy annually and update it if specific need arises
  • implement the actions set in our Environmental Improvement Plans

Environmental Purchasing Policy
Cylch have also produced an Environmental Purchasing Policy

Aim
The aim of this policy is to ensure that goods and services purchased for, and on behalf of Cylch are where possible, manufactured, delivered, used and managed at end-of-life in an environmentally responsible manner.

Scope
This policy should apply where possible to all purchasing decisions made by Cylch staff and volunteers located in the Cardiff office.  This policy also applies to Cylch staff remote to the Cardiff office where possible; however it is recognised that some purchasing decisions may be not subject to control of Cylch employees.

Key Issues
The key issues addressed by this policy are:

  • the need for principles to be developed with regards Cylch’s purchasing in order to support Cylch’s Environmental Policy
  • the need to continue to improve Cylch’s environmental performance
  • the need to set an example of best practice to Members and partnership organisations

Implementation

  • The policy will be implemented through appropriate training and communication of key principles regarding purchasing procedures.  A copy of this purchasing policy will be located in the Green Dragon folder (Cardiff office) and on the company server.
  • Evaluation and Review
  • This policy will be reviewed and updated annually.
