Carbon Trading

Carbon or carbon equivalent emissions (CO2e) are produced each time a product is manufactured. Re-using or recycling an item will avoid the carbon output associated with producing a new item.

Community re-use and recycling organisations have an important part to play in reducing carbon emissions. Cylch is investigating the value of the climate change outcomes of Members’ activities. Cylch is also conducting research into the development of a community carbon credit as a potential finance stream for Members.

This research is undertaken in partnership with the London Community Recycling Network (LCRN) and Community Recycling Network for Scotland (CRNS).

We aim to generate new sources of finance through valuing the Community Recycling Networks’ contribution to reducing the UK’s carbon emissions.

We also aim to:

  1. Develop a robust carbon finance stream, which can be used by community recyclers throughout the UK to generate revenue and investment capital.
  2. Develop standards, methodologies and processes to measure and monitor carbon emissions for the various material streams.
  3. Develop infrastructure to enable community recycling organisations to report on carbon and carbon equivalent emissions.
  4. Protect and promote the ‘community recycling network’ in making a significant and measurable contribution to emissions reductions.

The project is seeking input from a range of stakeholders including member organisations from across the Community Recycling Network. The role of the partnership will be to coordinate an Action Research program with members taking part in helping to develop a simple yet robust means of measuring carbon emissions and savings made.
